THE PHYSICIAN FELLOWSHIP EXPERIENCE

75% of fellows’ time will be protected for health services research, with the remaining 25% time given to clinical work in service of the Durham VA Healthcare System.

ELIGIBILITY
Fellow candidates must be board-eligible or -certified in some medical specialty, and must be a United States citizen.

STIPEND AND BENEFITS
Fellows receive a stipend commensurate with their PGY (postgraduate year)-level at Duke University Medical Center.  Standard VA benefits are included.
 

APPLICATION PROCEDURES
Each potential applicant has an initial screening telephone call with one of the Directors to assess eligibility and fit with our program.  Application materials include:

  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Two letters of support
  • Brief scientific writing sample completed primarily by the applicant.
  • 2-3 page personal statement to include research experience, career plan, goals for fellowship with potential projects and faculty mentors
  • Completed application form.

 

SELECTION PROCESS
All complete applications will be reviewed by several fellowship supervisors, including preceptors. Successful applicants ordinarily have experience in clinical research.  Notification of acceptance is based on the number and timing of applications received each year.
