Welcome to the Boosting Exercise Adherence in Knee Osteoarthritis (BOOST-OA) Study Webpage!

About BOOST-OA

The BOOST-OA study is being conducted by a team of researchers at the Durham VA, in collaboration with Eastern Colorado VA and Salt Lake City VA, and funded by VA’s Office of Research and Development, Rehabilitation Research Development & Translation Portfolio.

What is BOOST-OA?

Physical therapy improves health outcomes among people with knee osteoarthritis, and home exercise is key to maximizing its benefits. However, many individuals face challenges in engaging in home exercise, which limits the effectiveness of therapy. This study will test the effectiveness of a new intervention (BOOST-OA) to help Veterans stick to their home exercise plans after receiving physical therapy for knee osteoarthritis. The BOOST-OA intervention was developed based on prior research and best practices. It includes tools and activities to help Veterans set goals and feel confident about exercising. In addition, a health coach will help Veterans with monitoring progress and preventing exercise relapses.

Participation

We will be enrolling 360 Veterans with knee osteoarthritis from 8 VA clinics across the country. Participation is free and will last 24 months. Because our study has specific eligibility criteria, enrollment is by invitation only, which means not everyone will be able to join. If you’re not selected, please know your interest is important to us and there may be other opportunities in the future to participate in VA research.
