Post-Doctoral Fellowship Program

The Office of Academic Affairs, Department of Veterans Affairs, is offering post-doctoral fellowships in health services research to individuals in health-related fields, including biostatistics, epidemiology, health behavior, health economics, health policy and administration, medical informatics, psychology, and medical sociology.

The fellowship program is based at the Center for Health Services Research in Primary Care in the VA Medical Center, Durham, North Carolina. In operation since 1982, the HSR&D Center is one of 13 national VA Field Programs that conducts health services research and the only field program with an emphasis on primary care. Some of the research specialties of our faculty cover such areas as

Cancer Chronic Disease
Congestive Heart Failure Cost Analysis
Diagnostics Geriatric Care
Health Care Delivery Stroke
Women's Health Quality Care/Ethics
Primary Care Statistical Analysis and Methodology Impact of Race on Access to Care
Self-Management

Fellows will work closely with a faculty mentor from the Center for Health Services Research in Primary Care throughout their fellowship program. 

Post-Doctoral Fellowship candidates will work with a VHA faculty mentor on-site at the Field Program Center in Durham. The fellow and his/her mentor will negotiate goals for the fellowship period and identify research opportunities within the Center and its affiliates.

The fellowship begins October 1. The deadline for application is the previous April 1. Typically fellowships are for one year but renewal is possible for up to an additional 12 months. The stipend is $37,000 per annum, plus health insurance, a research allowance, and support for one scientific meeting a year. Candidates must be U.S. citizens. A cover letter describing research interests, fellowship goals, and career goals, a curriculum vitae, and three letters of recommendation should accompany each application.
